As part of their Venture Scouts Service Project, River Valley Venture Scouts planned and executed ‘Project Reminiscence’ a self-initiated project in collaboration with SAGE Counselling Centre and Thye Hua Kwan Moral Society.
Over two days on 29th May and 1st June 2023, over 80 seniors enjoyed an eventful and joyous morning at the National Orchid Garden (situated within the National Botanic Gardens), mesmerised by the captivating beauty the garden had to offer while interacting with student befrienders comprising Scouts from our school and Swiss Cottage Secondary School, as well as other RV student volunteers.

‘Project Reminiscence’ aimed to be an age-inclusive programme that provides seniors with the opportunity to share their stories and experiences.
Additionally, it sought to encourage inter-generational bonding through exploring Singapore’s rich cultural heritage together. The event evoked many fond memories and nostalgia for both seniors and students alike.
Braving the weather together with umbrellas
It was interesting and insightful for our students and Scouts to better understand how Singapore’s parks and gardens played a role in the lives of the elderly.
A tour of Burkina Hill under shelter from the rain
Kudos to our Venture Scouts and volunteer befrienders for the initiative and hard work in their community engagement efforts!

Really enjoyed reading about Project Reminiscence—it’s heartwarming to see Scouts and student volunteers creating such a meaningful day for seniors at the National Orchid Garden. I also appreciate that you included the collaboration with SAGE and Thye Hua Kwan Moral Society; it shows how community partnerships can make service projects more impactful. For anyone looking to deepen their understanding of service project documentation, Bizarre Lineage Wiki has some well-organized examples that complement this post.

Really nice to see a service project that focuses on meaningful intergenerational connection rather than just a one-off visit. The collaboration with SAGE and Thye Hua Kwan must have taken a lot of coordination for those two days at the National Orchid Garden. It’s really heartening to see young people take the initiative like this—organising a meaningful outing for seniors at the Botanic Gardens sounds like such a lovely way to build intergenerational bonds. I’ve found ScopeQuill helpful for discovering more community-driven project ideas and real-world examples to draw inspiration from. The collaboration with SAGE and Thye Hua Kwan must have made a real difference in ensuring the day was both safe and enjoyable for everyone involved.
